About the Portfolio
At the end of the school year, you will submit an artwork portfolio for review. You will post digital photographs of your work as well as feedback online.
Sustained Investigation and Selected Works are two portfolio components in each of the three Art and Design portfolios (2-D, 3-D, and Drawing). As outlined in the AP Art and Design scoring rules, each component requires you to demonstrate fundamental competency and a range of understanding in visual concerns and methodologies. Portfolio components are rated individually, and each contributes to the overall portfolio score, which is based on a 5-point scale.
Note: You may submit more than one Art and Design portfolio test in a given year, but each must be of a distinct type. Portfolios may not contain duplicate works or photos, and portfolios may not be combined. If you want to submit a portfolio for both Drawing and 3-D Art and Design, you must submit two distinct portfolios with two completely different sets of artwork, two unique inquiry statements, and your AP coordinator must order two examinations for you.
Portfolio Components
15 digital images; some may be details or process images | 60% of portfolio score
Students will submit images and writing to document their inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision:
- 15 digital images that can include process documentation and works of art and design.
- Typed responses to prompts, providing information about the inquiry that guided their investigation and ways they practiced, experimented, and revised.
Digital images of 5 works | 40% of portfolio score
Students submit digital images of their work and commentary online to demonstrate skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas:
- 5 works with commentary identifying the materials, processes, and ideas used.
- Works may come from the Sustained Investigation section, but they do not have to.
Course Content
Develop 3-D abilities in a variety of materials and processes, including sculpting, architectural rendering and models, metal work, ceramics, glass work, and more. You will make artwork that reflects your own ideas, talents, and knowledge.

You’ll explore why and how artists and designers present their work to viewers.
You’ll practice:
- Explaining how you used materials, processes, and ideas in your work
- Describing how the work shows your skills
- Identifying the questions that guided you in creating your work
- Pointing out how your work shows experimentation, practice, and revision
